Arboretum

This fall our class went to the arboretum and we learned all about trees and different plants that the native people used. For example the Douglas fir tree, they used this tree to make many different things like clothes and they also used it to weave baskets. Another tree we learned about was the cedar tree, for example they used the bark to make medicine.  They also used it to make canoes because of the straight logs. In our group we walked past a big leaf maple tree. When we saw it, we decided to jump in and play with the giant leaves. After a while we decided to bury a fourth grader in the leaves. We buried him so deep we could not see him. We had a fun time there and hope to again soon.

Art

In art with Ms. Baker we are working on drawing what we see.  The first exercise we did was drawing our hands without looking at the paper.  It gave the class a laugh, but most kids said it didn’t turn out so well.  But the main hand thing we did was… drawing our hands.  First we put our hands under a clear 3 by 4 picture plane (clear white board) and traced all the contours (lines) that we saw with a black expo pen.  Next we gridded and shaded a 9 by 12 piece of paper. Then we drew what was in each unit on the picture plane in one unit on the piece of paper.  After the whole class was done with the drawing process we got to add highlights and shadows.

Art is a lot of fun!!

The Kite Fighters

Ms. Van is reading us a book called the” Kite Fighters” by Linda Sue Park.. There are two main characters Young-sup and Kee-sup. This book takes place in 1473 Seoul, Korea. Kee-sup and Young-sup are brothers. Young-sup is the younger brother. Young-sup has a very interesting talent in kite flying and Kee-sup has a talent in making kites. Kee-sup experiences a capping ceremony which shows he is coming of age. Young-sup suddenly feels so much younger than Kee-sup. This book shows how Young-sup and Kee-sup overcome their differences. Together the two brothers create a tool that might just win them victory.

A Visit From Jamie Pederson

In our class we had a visit from a state representative Jamie Pederson. When he came we learned a lot about what he does as a representative, like how he works for the 43rd district in Washington. We also learned that the schools get half of the state’s money that they earned from taxes.  Jamie works in the capital of Washington State, Olympia. In the capital they vote about laws. We also learned that there are 49 different districts and that there is about 137,000 people living in each district. We had a great time learning all these cool facts and we hope he comes to visit again soon.
