The Giraffe Project

The 4th and 5th graders have been working on a special project called the Giraffe Project. In the project we have been learning about human giraffes. You’re probably wondering what a human giraffe is, so we will explain . A human giraffe is someone who sticks there neck out for others and their community, they take helpful action when they see a problem. The reason their teaching us this is so we can become a human giraffe ourselves and stick up for the things we believe are fair and right. Some of the human giraffes we have read about include, The Earth Defenders and Hazel Wolf.  The Earth Defenders are a good example because when they saw a problem in their community they took helpful action by cleaning up their streets when they were full of garbage and junk. Another example is Hazel Wolf. She is a good example because when people weren’t taking care of the plants and animals she cared about. She never stopped trying even after she went to jail for protesting for what she believed in.

If you saw something bad happening in your community, would you take action?

Science project: Ecosytems

In our class, our science project is on ecosystems. We have created a fair test with terraria and aquariums.

In our terraria we have many things. Including alfalfa, rye grass and mustard sprouts. We also have isopods and crickets in our terraria. We started on September 9th this year.  Our focus question is, ”which seed can grow the most sprouts in two weeks”.  We found out that the rye grass has the most sprouts. The plants are growing so fast! It is incredible.

In our aquariums there are White Cloud Mountain Minnows. They look transparent. They have a red little heart by their eyes. We also have elodea. It’s green and can be up to 2 ft. long. Duckweed is also green and is oval like. They connect together and have roots. They duplicate fast and make a green carpet on the surface of the water.

Pond Snails are also in our aquariums. They eat all the dead tissue of plants and animals. You can say they are like a cleanup crew. They are a consumer [scavenger]. Pond Snails can eat all the food so that can be a problem.

That’s our science projects!

Because of Mr.Terupt

Because of Mr.Terupt

Ms.Van started reading us a book called “Because of Mr.Terupt” by Rob Buyea. The class seems to be enjoying it. For example, whenever Ms.Van closes the book all the kids in the class start screaming “NOOOOOOOOOOO!” In the book, each chapter tells about a different character in the 5th grade class. Except they only talk about seven kids. First there’s Peter who is a trouble maker.  Next there is Jessica, who is the new girl, and is very shy.  Third, there is Alexia, who is mean, sassy, she says “like” a lot, and always starts girl wars.  Fourth, there is Luke, he is smart, and likes school.  Fifth, there is Danielle, she is self-conscious, and never stands up for herself.  Sixth, there is Jeffery who hates school. Last but not least is Anna, she has no close friends, is quiet, does not like to be noticed, and her mom is her best friend.  And of course there is Mr. Terupt, the new teacher.  In the book the students usually have a problem. For example, one day Peter put Elmer’s glue on the bottom of Luke’s shoes, so Luke went to the bathroom to wash his shoes off. When Luke walked into the class and slid half way across the room and then Mrs. Williams walked into the room… We recommend this book to you because it’s funny and, exciting we think you will really like it.

International Peace Day Screenprinting

Did you know that September 21st was International Peace Day?
To participate, we did an art project on peace using screen printing!
First to make the prints we drew all of the pictures and copied them in sharpie markers. The pictures represented images of peace.
Then when the screens were done getting ready we took a squeegee with ink on the board, then pulled back the squeegee and did that three times on paper. Then we screen printed shirts and posters.

Book reviews week 1

Today I will be talking about books that have been popular in our class. NUMBER 5: The Hunger Games was widely recommended from at least 6 kids in the class. The book is about a girl who volunteers for her sister in the hunger games and is about her surviving and training. NUMBER 4: The Molly Moon Series takes place in New York and is about a girl named Molly Moon who finds a hypnotism book and it changes her life. NUMBER 3: Georges Secret Key To The Universe This book has a sequel and possibly a third book in the series but the first book is about a boy who is cut off from almost all technology by his very eco-friendly parents but when his pig escapes in to the old abandoned house next door he meets someone and learns a lot about science. NUMBER 2: Because of Mr. Terupt which is about 7 kids who have a first year teacher named Mr. Terupt who helps them all the kids change for the better and become better people. NUMBER 1: Holes this is a book about a boy who is always at the wrong place at the wrong time and after he has shoes fall into his hands from the sky he later learns those shoes were being auctioned off and were going to sell for a lot and he later goes to court and then to camp green lake where he has to dig a 5 foot hole every day. Well that was the first week of book recommendations and keep in mind that the books are NOT in order and it’s just a random order

Best Part of Me

These  are  the  poems  we  have  been  working  on,  inspired by the  book  “The Best  Part of Me”  by  Wendy  Ewald . First we started by thinking about adverbs and adjectives and how we could add them in our poems. Then, we wrote lists about our favorite body parts and why we like them. Finally, we published the poems and took pictures of our favorite body parts.
